About the Role


As Head of Data at Sparrow, you'll play a crucial role in shaping and growing our data engineering team. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on contributions to deliver impactful data solutions across our SaaS platform, enhancing the global supply chain for spare parts. You'll manage the team, guide best practices, and actively participate in end-to-end problem-solving to drive our product forward. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on our company’s future, working directly with internal and external stakeholders. 

It is also an opportunity to work on diverse Data Science and Engineering topics, including NLP, LLM productization, image processing, predictive modeling and more.


What You’ll Do


  • Lead the Data Engineering Team: Act as both people manager and technical mentor, overseeing team members and reviewing their work to ensure quality and alignment with project goals.
  • Develop and Implement Data Science Features: Bring machine learning features from concept to production, particularly those involving text. Contribute hands-on to research and development efforts.
  • Establish and Refine Processes: Introduce and enhance team processes, best practices, and benchmarks to ensure consistency and efficiency.
  • Product Collaboration: Partner closely with our CEO, CTO, and Head of CS to align data initiatives with product goals and user needs.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Coordinate with different departments to ensure data solutions meet customer requirements and strategic objectives.
  • Team Growth and Development: Support team members' growth and help build a strong, collaborative team culture, while identifying future hiring needs.


Must-Haves


  • 5+ Years of Experience in data science and/or engineering, with at least 2 years in data science.
  • Technical Leadership: Proven experience managing a data team, guiding their work, and fostering their development.
  • Hands-On Skills: Strong proficiency in deploying ML models to production, ideally involving text-based features.
  • Product-Minded Approach: Ability to solve problems end-to-end and think strategically about data’s role in product functionality.
  • Broad Knowledge Base: Proficient in a wide range of tools across data engineering and data science, and comfortable in a hands-on environment.
  • Language: Fluent in English 
  • Communication: Directness and openness in communication.


Nice-to-Haves


  • Experience in SaaS or Spare Parts Industry: Industry experience would be an asset but is not essential.
  • Advanced ML Experience: Experience working with ML for images or in developing predictive models in production.
  • Additional Languages: Proficiency in German.
